What is NAIMA?

NAIMA is a Canadian professional training and certification provider for medical aesthetics, with 15,000+ graduates and 22 instructors listed on its site. It trains nurses, physicians, dentists and other licensed professionals in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Kitchener and Regina.

NAIMA describes its approach as "medical aesthetics education that connects knowledge with hands-on practice." Programs combine theory with supervised practice, practical guidance and post-course support. The catalogue falls into four groups:

  • Injectables: neuromodulators, dermal fillers and advanced injection techniques
  • Medical and regenerative medicine: PRP, hormone health and regenerative clinical training
  • Aesthetics: facial techniques, skin treatments and aesthetic foundations
  • Business and practice development: clinic operations, consultation and practice growth

For Calgary professionals, that means you can start with a single injectable certification, commit to a longer preceptorship, or add a one-day masterclass to an existing practice.

Injectable foundations: Botox (neuromodulator) and filler

Most new injectors start with the Neuromodulators Certification, which applies to botulinum toxin type A products such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin. It covers face and muscle anatomy, product knowledge, safe injection practice and aftercare, then moves to supervised injections on live models. The Dermal Filler Certification adds filler-specific anatomy, product knowledge and supervised treatments across lips, jawline, chin, smile lines, cheeks and under eyes. Read the detail in our guides to Botox certification in Calgary and the dermal filler course in Calgary.

The 8-Day Preceptorship Program

The 8-Day Preceptorship Program is NAIMA's advanced, multi-module option. It covers Botox injectables, dermal fillers, PRP for hair and facial rejuvenation, fat dissolving injectables, and sales and consultation. Modules are separated by 2-week breaks, which suits working clinicians in Calgary who cannot step away for consecutive weeks. Training runs in groups of 6 students across 3 training beds, with 1:1 treatment designed to replicate a clinic.

Masterclasses

Masterclasses are focused, usually one-day sessions for practitioners who already inject or who want a clinical specialty. Every NAIMA masterclass is offered in Calgary. Options include:

  • Fat Dissolving Injectables Masterclass: targets areas such as the double chin and belly fat
  • Russian Lips Masterclass: lip anatomy and hands-on lip filler technique
  • Thread Lift Masterclass: thread placement and technique
  • Liquid Rhinoplasty Masterclass: non-surgical nose refinement using dermal filler
  • PRP and men's health masterclasses: covered in our PRP and men's health training in Calgary guide

Who can enrol in aesthetic training in Calgary?

NAIMA's FAQ says licensed medical practitioners can enrol in a certification course, a masterclass or the preceptorship. It names physicians, surgeons, nurse practitioners, RNs, LPNs, RPNs and internationally trained medical graduates, and the about page also names dentists.

Entry requirements and practical training vary by program, and admissions confirms your eligibility. If you are changing careers and do not yet hold a health professional licence, raise that in your Admissions call before you plan around a course.

Post-licensure training matters in Alberta. Joint practice advice from the CLPNA, CRPNA and CRNA states that "at entry-to-practice, nurses do not have the competencies or education to perform injectable aesthetic therapies" (joint practice advice). Focused training is how nurses build that competence.

Who can inject Botox and filler in Alberta?

Alberta limits cosmetic injection to regulated professionals who are authorized and competent, and nurses need a client-specific order from an authorized prescriber for Schedule 1 drugs such as neuromodulators. The table summarizes what the colleges say; check each college for current requirements.

Profession

What Alberta sources say

Physician

An authorized prescriber for nurses' client-specific orders (CRNA). Confirm current expectations with the CPSA.

Nurse practitioner

An authorized prescriber. Prescribers must assess and diagnose each client before prescribing (CRNA).

Registered nurse

May inject with a client-specific order. Standing orders "must never be used." RNs must have "reasonable access to the authorized prescriber" (CRNA).

Licensed practical nurse

Client-specific order for Schedule 1 drugs and consent each time (CLPNA). CLPNA removed the direct or indirect supervision requirement.

Registered psychiatric nurse

Covered by the joint CLPNA, CRPNA and CRNA practice advice.

Dentist

Listed by CRNA as a possible prescriber. Own cosmetic scope: confirm with your college.

Pharmacist

Since 2025, must not administer an injection for aesthetic purposes as a regulated member (Alberta College of Pharmacy).

Esthetician

Injection is a restricted activity limited to authorized regulated professionals (CRNA).

Sources: CRNA, Injectable Cosmetic Therapies: Practice Advice for Registered Nurses; CLPNA, LPN Practice Guideline: Injectable Aesthetic Therapies and its supervision notice; Alberta College of Pharmacy, standards on personal services. CLPNA appears to be rebranding as the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides, so check the current name and documents.

Three more points matter for Calgary injectors. First, CRNA states that "only an authorized prescriber can procure Schedule 1 drugs." Second, CRNA's wording on prescriber availability is "reasonable access." Third, a NAIMA certificate is education; it does not by itself authorize anyone to inject. Our full breakdown is in Who Can Inject Botox and Filler in Alberta?

Scope of practice is set by your regulatory college. Confirm with your college before practising.

How much does aesthetic training cost in Calgary?

Tuition runs from CAD $2,000 for the PRP Hair & Face Masterclass to CAD $9,995 for the 8-Day Preceptorship Program, with the Neuromodulators Certification at CAD $2,500 and the Dermal Filler Certification at CAD $4,500. Book a call with Admissions for pricing on other masterclasses.

You can pay in three ways:

  3. Humm financing through NAIMA's financing page: up to $30,000 for tuition and materials, 0% interest on eligible loans, terms up to 5 years in equal monthly payments, early repayment without penalty, and a credit decision in less than 7 minutes. Humm confirms approval, rates and terms at application.

Online card checkout does not submit a Humm application. Contact admissions first to arrange financing, then confirm enrolment once it is in place.

Refunds and rescheduling: NAIMA's refund policy gives a full refund for Certification Courses with written notice 30 days before the class starts. NAIMA has no partial refund policy. You may reschedule to any course with 15 days' notice before the class begins.

Where is NAIMA's Calgary training held?

Every NAIMA course and masterclass is offered in Calgary. Your venue details are confirmed when you book, so you can plan travel around a confirmed address.

To plan your Calgary training:

  1. Check the Calgary course listing for current sessions.
  2. Book a call with Admissions to choose your dates (a 30-minute call with a NAIMA Admissions Coordinator).
  3. Discuss your licence, experience and goals, and which programs suit your timeline.
  4. Book time off or travel once your dates and venue details are confirmed.

Training from Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Chestermere, Canmore, Red Deer and southern Alberta

Calgary is the practical training centre for professionals across southern Alberta. Nurses and physicians in Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and Chestermere can usually commute in for a course day. Practitioners in Canmore, Red Deer and smaller southern Alberta communities may want to plan an overnight stay, especially for 2-day certifications.

A few planning tips:

  • Book once your venue is confirmed. Your venue details are confirmed when you book; arrange accommodation after that.
  • Plan around module breaks. The 8-Day Preceptorship Program has 2-week breaks between modules, so you return to Calgary several times.
  • Flying in. If you are travelling from outside the region, Calgary International Airport is the usual entry point.
  • Have your licence details ready. Admissions confirms eligibility during your call.

Your regulator does not change based on where you train. If you practise in Red Deer or Canmore, the same Alberta colleges (CRNA, CLPNA, CRPNA and CPSA) apply.

Should you train in Calgary or Edmonton?

Both cities sit under the same Alberta regulators and offer every NAIMA course, so the choice usually comes down to travel time and venue logistics. NAIMA's 3-Master Classes: Men's Health & Sexual Wellness page notes "multi-city training (Calgary & Edmonton)." For a side-by-side view, read Medical Aesthetics Courses in Alberta: Calgary vs Edmonton.

What happens after you certify?

After certification, you still need the authorizing pieces Alberta requires, such as a prescriber relationship and client-specific orders, before you treat clients. NAIMA adds several graduate supports:

  • Graduate membership: complimentary, with no membership fee. It includes a membership certificate, free access to virtual live training with a certificate of participation, and email updates on internships, job opportunities, model calls and promotions.
  • Practice with models: NAIMA's FAQ says graduates can practise by bringing models to a 3D Lifestyle Clinic, only under an expert medical practitioner's supervision. The 3D Lifestyle clinics named on the site are in Vancouver and Coquitlam, BC.
  • Preceptorship pathway: NAIMA's FAQ says about two in three 8-Day Preceptorship graduates work at 3D Lifestyle Clinics or affiliated partner clinics across North America, usually starting part-time at one day a week. The course page says graduates "may be eligible for part-time employment opportunities"; employment is not guaranteed.

Marketing your services in Alberta

Plan your marketing with your college's rules in mind. CRNA advises nurses to avoid "endorsements or testimonials about products, services or results" and not to offer inducements such as limited-time offers or discount coupons. The CPSA Advertising standard bars physicians from testimonials and inducements such as time-limited prices, coupons and gift certificates. Federal rules also restrict how prescription drugs are advertised to the public (Food and Drug Regulations, C.01.044).

How to choose your first course: a step-by-step plan

  1. Confirm your scope. Check your college's current guidance on injectable aesthetic therapies.
  2. Book a call with Admissions. A 30-minute call covers your background, goals and the right program.
  3. Pick a starting point. Choose the Neuromodulators Certification, the Dermal Filler Certification, or the 8-Day Preceptorship Program if you want a structured, multi-modality start.
  4. Arrange payment. Decide between upfront payment, four bi-weekly instalments or Humm financing.
  5. Confirm logistics. Choose your Calgary dates on your Admissions call; your venue details are confirmed when you book.
  6. Set up your practice framework. Before treating clients, put a prescriber relationship and client-specific orders in place, as Alberta guidance requires.
