What are Alberta's rules for PRP and men's health injections?
The joint CLPNA, CRPNA and CRNA practice advice on injectable aesthetic therapies lists PRP alongside neuromodulators and fillers. It states that "at entry-to-practice, nurses do not have the competencies or education to perform injectable aesthetic therapies" and that "only an authorized prescriber can procure drugs" (joint practice advice).
Several men's health protocols use neuromodulators. For those, CRNA says "all Schedule 1 drugs (e.g., neuromodulators) require a client-specific order from an authorized prescriber," and standing orders "must never be used" (CRNA practice advice). CRNA's restricted activities standard authorizes RNs to perform invasive procedures below the dermis (CRNA restricted activities standards).
PRP involves a blood draw as well as an injection. Confirm with your college how its guidance applies to venipuncture for PRP in your practice setting before you offer it. Since 2025, Alberta pharmacists must not administer injections for aesthetic purposes as regulated members (Alberta College of Pharmacy). For the profession-by-profession picture, read Who Can Inject Botox and Filler in Alberta?
Scope of practice is set by your regulatory college. Confirm with your college before practising.
