Who can take a dermal filler course in Calgary?

Licensed medical practitioners can enrol. NAIMA's FAQ names physicians, surgeons, nurse practitioners, RNs, LPNs, RPNs and internationally trained medical graduates, and the about page names dentists. Admissions confirms eligibility for each program.

Some practitioners take the Neuromodulators Certification first. Your Admissions call can cover which order suits your experience. Our Botox certification in Calgary guide covers that course in detail.

What are Alberta's rules for injecting dermal filler?

Alberta's nursing regulators recommend a client-specific order after prescriber assessment for fillers, and require one for Schedule 1 drugs such as neuromodulators. Fillers are regulated differently from botulinum toxin at the federal level. Check your college for current requirements.

  • Federal status: Health Canada classifies dermal fillers as Class III medical devices, or Class IV if they incorporate animal or human tissue or derivatives (Health Canada guidance). They are medical devices, not prescription drugs.
  • Licensed product: CRNA restates that fillers must have a Health Canada licence, appear in Health Canada's Medical Devices Active Licence Listing (MDALL), and be sold by a Medical Device Establishment Licence holder.
  • Orders for nurses: CRNA recommends a client-specific order after assessment for fillers, and says "standing orders are orders that are not client-specific and must never be used." Source: CRNA practice advice.
  • Prescriber access: CRNA requires "reasonable access to the authorized prescriber for consultation or assistance."
  • LPNs and RPNs: the joint CLPNA, CRPNA and CRNA practice advice covers fillers and states that "at entry-to-practice, nurses do not have the competencies or education to perform injectable aesthetic therapies."
  • Pharmacists: since 2025, Alberta pharmacists must not administer an injection for aesthetic purposes as regulated members (Alberta College of Pharmacy).

Completing a filler course does not authorize anyone to inject. See Who Can Inject Botox and Filler in Alberta? for the full breakdown, including physicians under the CPSA.

Scope of practice is set by your regulatory college. Confirm with your college before practising.

  3. Choose the 8-Day Preceptorship Program for a structured, multi-module pathway.

Before treating clients, set up your prescriber relationship and order process. Keep marketing within CRNA and CPSA advertising rules, which limit testimonials and inducements such as limited-time offers and coupons.
