Who can inject Botox in Alberta?
Alberta treats neuromodulators as Schedule 1 drugs that nurses may inject only under a client-specific order from an authorized prescriber. Federally, Health Canada lists botulinum toxin on its Prescription Drug List.
Here is what the Alberta colleges say; check each college for current requirements:
- RNs (CRNA): "All Schedule 1 drugs (e.g., neuromodulators) require a client-specific order from an authorized prescriber." The prescriber is a physician, NP or dentist authorized to prescribe Schedule 1 drugs. Standing orders "must never be used." RNs "are not authorized to independently prescribe injectable cosmetic therapies," and must have "reasonable access to the authorized prescriber for consultation or assistance." Source: CRNA practice advice.
- Prescriber assessment: CRNA says the prescriber must assess and diagnose each client before prescribing.
- LPNs (CLPNA): a client-specific order for Schedule 1 drugs and consent each time. CLPNA says LPNs no longer need direct or indirect physician or NP supervision for aesthetic procedures, but still need an order and collaborative practice. Sources: CLPNA guideline and CLPNA notice.
- RPNs: covered by the joint CLPNA, CRPNA and CRNA practice advice.
- Pharmacists: since 2025, a regulated member "must not administer an injection for aesthetic purposes in their capacity as a regulated member" (Alberta College of Pharmacy).
- Procurement: CRNA says "only an authorized prescriber can procure Schedule 1 drugs."
A certificate from any course, including NAIMA's, is education. It does not authorize anyone to inject. For profession-by-profession detail, including physicians under the CPSA, read Who Can Inject Botox and Filler in Alberta?
Scope of practice is set by your regulatory college. Confirm with your college before practising.
