What does NAIMA's Botox (neuromodulator) course in Montreal cover?
The Neuromodulators Certification covers neuromodulator injections with products such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin, face and muscle anatomy, product knowledge, safe injection practice and aftercare instruction. A medical practitioner shadows you, so you perform the injections rather than only observe, and instructors give real-time feedback throughout.
NAIMA, the North American Institute of Medical Aesthetics, trains licensed professionals in seven Canadian cities (Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Kitchener and Regina) and reports 15,000+ graduates. Every NAIMA course and masterclass is offered in Montreal. The neuromodulator course is its core injectables entry point, and Botox injectables training is also a module of the 8-Day Preceptorship Program.
The course has two parts:
- Theory and technique: facial and muscle anatomy, product knowledge, safe injection practice, and how to instruct patients on aftercare.
- Hands-on practice: small-group clinical work with 1:1 treatments meant to mirror an aesthetic clinic.
NAIMA's blog also has a post on what happens on day 1 versus day 2 of neuromodulator training.

Who can inject Botox (botulinum toxin) in Quebec?
Under the joint notice of the Collège des médecins du Québec (CMQ) and the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ), physicians may inject after individually assessing each patient, and nurses may inject with an individual prescription. Collective prescriptions for aesthetic injections are not allowed, and a physician must be available on site within 15 minutes after the injections.
What the CMQ/OIIQ notice (PDF) requires:
- Individual evaluation: the physician carefully evaluates each patient, makes a diagnosis and sets a treatment plan with an individual prescription.
- No collective prescriptions: "les ordonnances collectives autorisant les infirmières à réaliser des injections à des fins esthétiques ne sont plus autorisées."
- Physician availability: the prescribing physician, or another responsible physician, must be "accessible et disponible sur place dans les 15 minutes suivant une procédure d'injections."
- Nurse assessment: the nurse assesses before each treatment and refers back to the physician if there is a contraindication.
Botulinum toxin is a prescription drug on Health Canada's Prescription Drug List. Quebec's Nurses Act (I-8) lists "administering and adjusting prescribed medications or other prescribed substances" as a reserved nursing activity, and the Medical Act (M-9) reserves prescribing to physicians, subject to listed exceptions.
If you are an IPS (specialized nurse practitioner), nursing assistant, dentist or pharmacist, confirm with your college whether cosmetic injection is within your scope. Quebec's orders have also announced a joint initiative on common medico-aesthetic guidelines, so rules may be updated. Our Quebec regulation guide goes profession by profession.
Scope of practice is set by your regulatory college. Confirm with your college before practising.
