What are the Ontario rules for PRP and men's health injections?
Injections in Ontario involve controlled acts, so clinicians need authority from their own college. Physicians and NPs act within their own scope; nurses need an order from an authorized provider. For the PRP blood draw itself, confirm with your college. Read who can inject Botox in Ontario for the profession-by-profession guide.
What the sources say:
- The CNO Aesthetic Services practice guideline lists PRP as an aesthetic procedure. It describes injections as involving the controlled acts of "performing a prescribed procedure below the dermis" and "administering a substance by injection." It does not address venipuncture for PRP.
- The CNO Scope of Practice standard lets RNs and RPNs initiate venipuncture only to establish peripheral venous access in urgent situations. That initiation authority does not appear to cover drawing blood for elective PRP, so the rule for PRP blood draws is not settled in the sources reviewed. Confirm with your college.
- CNO has approved updated standards that require client-specific orders rather than directives for aesthetic procedures, after an initial in-person or virtual assessment by the authorized provider (CNO release on Newswire). Confirm the current requirements with CNO.
- Neuromodulator-based protocols such as Bocox and Scrotum Tox use botulinum toxin, which is on Health Canada's Prescription Drug List.
- Physicians who delegate must follow the CPSO Delegation of Controlled Acts policy, including patient assessment and onsite supervision unless an exception applies.
- Dentists: the RCDSO says Ontario dentists are not authorized to inject botulinum toxin or dermal fillers extra-orally for cosmetic purposes.
Scope of practice is set by your regulatory college. Confirm with your college before practising.
