What does NAIMA's dermal filler course cover?

The Dermal Filler Certification teaches facial anatomy, product knowledge and safe injection technique, then has you inject live models under a medical practitioner's supervision. NAIMA lists it at Basic and Advanced levels, blended.

NAIMA, the North American Institute of Medical Aesthetics, trains licensed health professionals in injectables, men's health and regenerative medicine, and reports more than 15,000 graduates. It trains in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Kitchener and Regina, and every NAIMA course and masterclass is offered in Edmonton.

Theory and technique:

  • Facial and muscle anatomy
  • Product knowledge
  • Safe injection practices
  • Aftercare instructions

Hands-on practice: you inject under a medical practitioner's supervision rather than only observing. The course runs over 2 days; your Admissions call can walk you through the schedule.

What are the rules for injecting dermal filler in Alberta?

Dermal fillers are Health Canada-licensed medical devices, not prescription drugs, but Alberta nursing guidance still recommends a client-specific order after a prescriber's assessment. Injection is a restricted activity limited to authorized regulated professionals.

  • Federal status: Health Canada classifies fillers without animal or human tissue as Class III medical devices, and those with animal or human tissue or derivatives as Class IV (Health Canada guidance).
  • CRNA product rules: fillers must have a Health Canada licence, appear in MDALL, and be sold by an MDEL holder (CRNA practice advice).
  • Orders for RNs: CRNA recommends a client-specific order after assessment for fillers. Neuromodulators, as Schedule 1 drugs, require a client-specific order, and standing orders "must never be used."
  • Restricted activity: CRNA states restricted activities such as administering injections "may only be performed by regulated health professionals who are authorized and competent to perform them."
  • LPNs and RPNs: the joint CLPNA/CRPNA/CRNA practice advice covers neuromodulators, fillers and PRP, and states, "At entry-to-practice, nurses do not have the competencies or education to perform injectable aesthetic therapies." CLPNA's LPN guideline applies to LPNs.
  • Pharmacists: the Alberta College of Pharmacy says regulated members must not administer injections for aesthetic purposes (a standard in place since 2025).
  • Advertising: CRNA advises against testimonials and inducements such as limited-time offers. CPSA's advertising standard has similar limits for physicians.

Scope of practice is set by your regulatory college. Confirm with your college before practising. A NAIMA certificate does not by itself authorize anyone to inject. For the profession-by-profession view, read Who Can Inject Botox and Filler in Alberta?

How do you get started?

Follow these steps to move from research to your first filler training day.

  1. Confirm scope. Read your college's guidance and plan how you will get client-specific orders from an authorized prescriber.
  2. Book a call with Admissions. NAIMA's admissions process starts with a 30-minute call with an Admissions Coordinator.
  3. Choose your dates. Pick your Edmonton dates on that call and review the daily schedule for the 2-day Dermal Filler Certification.
  4. Arrange payment. Choose upfront, four bi-weekly instalments, or Humm financing through admissions.
  5. Plan advanced work. After certification, consider the Liquid Rhinoplasty Masterclass or the Russian Lips Masterclass, which covers lip anatomy and hands-on lip filler technique.
